Every Friday night during the summer, residents of Asheville get together in a downtown park, jam on the drums, cowbells (“Gotta have more cow bell”) and dance. I haven’t seen a drum circle like this since my last Grateful Dead concert almost 15 years ago. Check out the video below:
I drove to Asheville, NC with my wife and our dogs to celebrate our 10 year anniversary. Asheville is a very interesting place and very beautiful. Walking around in downtown Asheville is different; very artsy and lots of street entertainment. I particularly liked this metallic, coin-operated drummer in the video below:
Last night I went out to grab a bite to eat and I stumbled upon this little cafe called Beatniks. I had driven by it several times before and it really didn’t look like anything special. Tonight, however, the parking lot was jammed pack, so I figured they must have good food and I was starving.
I went inside and discovered that they were having an open mic night. This place was jam packed, mostly (if not all) with townees…I think I stuck out like a sore thumb. Anyway, I had a sandwich (don’t even rememeber what I ate) and beer and I just stood way in the back and started listening…these people rocked! Beatles, Pete Townshend, originals, fun songs, sing alongs, acoustic and electric guitar, it was all good.
About four hours, 15 performance and many beers later, I had to get out of there. Thanks to Beatniks for a great last night in Joshua Tree and kudos to the all of the artists who performed…you are all very talented and more importantly know how to have a good time.
I am a Chicago White Sox fan but I have got to hand it to the Rockies! What a run…I have been rooting for you for the past week and I hope you continue the run through the playoffs.
I’m coming home…um, I mean I wish it was my home! Whatever but ever since I visited Colorado in July (see Mt. Shavano climb) I have been thinking about coming back. It was a long drive back to Chicago and that got me thinking; why not fly out for a short climbing trips over a weekend? No kids, no dog, no kids, no kids…know what I mean?
Here are the details:
-I have booked a flight for Friday, August 10th through Sunday, August 12th
-I am staying in the ski resort town of Keystone. I got a great deal on a condo right next to the slopes…not much skiing going on right now!
-I want to get some good hiking in on Friday afternoon, all day Saturday and in the morning on Sunday
-My big climb will be on Saturday when I am planning on climbing Grey’s Peak & Torrey’s Peak
I have a few more details planned out for the hike up Torreys/Greys peaks but I am going to share these in my next post, once I have a few more details set in stone. See you soon.
